Cataracts

What are Cataracts?

Cataracts are a common cause of reduced vision as we grow older.

It is caused by the normally clear lens of the eye becoming cloudy.

As the lens becomes increasingly cloudy, vision through the affected eye decreases.

Symptoms of Cataracts

Symptoms commonly associated with cataracts include

  • Blurry or cloudy vision
  • Faded colours
  • Increased or extreme glare from lights
  • Poor vision at night
  • Difficulty with either near vision or distance vision
  • Multiple images
  • Frequent changes in eye spectacle prescription.

Treatment of Cataracts

Once glasses are no longer effective, surgery is the only treatment option for cataracts. Cataract surgery is recommended when the cataract is severe enough to impact the patient's daily activities.

Cataract surgery is a day surgery, takes around 10 minutes and is generally performed under heavy twilight sedation and a local anaesthetic. The procedure involves removing the cloudy lens and replacing it with an artificial, clear lens called an Intraocular Lens (IOL). We perform state-of-the-art measurements of both your eyes to calculate the correct tailored IOL for each eye.

Although cataract surgery is a very safe procedure, it still carries risks, as with any surgery. However, as Dr Moloney is trained in both cataract and retinal surgery, he is able to handle anything unexpected that may arise during surgery.
